Stamatis Takes Win at Winternationals to Become West Australia’s First Top Fuel Champion.
With only 25 points separating the top three Australian Top Fuel Championship contenders, it was Martin Stamatis who secured the title in a suspenseful finals showdown.
It wasn’t enough for Stamatis to claim the title and become West Australia’s first Top Fuel Champion, he also claimed the top qualifier position, lowest elapsed time, top speed and was the Shannon’s shootout competition winner.
Stamatis began the weekend successfully as he top qualified with a 4.619 second pass at 315.93mph.
The first round of eliminations saw Stamatis match up against Terry Sainty, which he comfortably won with a 4.603 second pass.
The second round placed Martin against Mark Mariani where he proved his ability, taking the win with a 4.834 second pass.
The second round also saw Martin’s Jim Read Racing team mate, Phil Read, paired up against Phil Lamattina, who was the other driver alongside Stamatis and Read competing as a championship contender.
Fortunately for the Jim Read Racing team, Read was able to take the win, ensuring that the championship would be decided in the final and guaranteed the championship would be taken by the Jim Read Racing team.
The suspenseful final between the two team mates proved to be the most thrilling of the event.
Phil was first off the start line, but it was Martin who demonstrated why he deserved the title, as he passed his team mate running a quick 4.72 second pass.
Martin’s performance throughout the weekend was ultimately faultless as he proved his proficiency in the sport and why he was the most worthy competitor to be crowned the Top Fuel Champion.
